Rough Stick Artist Hector Aguilar creates handcrafted unique natural rustic furniture from woods native to the southwest United States. Hector uses cholla (choy-ya) cactus, pine, cedar and juniper harvested from New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. The tables, chairs, benches, plant stands, bird feeders and bird houses that Hector creates are all one of a kind pieces of rustic furniture. You may order four chairs and each will be unique. He makes everything one at a time and it may take five or six weeks before your order is ready.
His creations are crafted from combinations of cholla (choy-ya) cactus, pine, juniper and red heart cedar woods. These materials are not readily available through the normal lumber yard or saw mill (except the pine). Hector has to scour the countryside of New Mexico and Arizona to find large cholla that has been dead and down for about fifty years before it is suitable for furniture. The juniper is becoming more scarce as more bear carvers are scrounging for good wood to make large bears. The red hearted juniper has to come almost 300 miles from south Texas. Rough Stick is located in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico - the home of the
Hector is the proud father of two beautiful daughters. Someday they will be breaking hearts and causing Hector some anxious evenings.
